On March 24, World champion in slalom Mikaela Shiffrin eventually straddled the gate and had to hand her title to Ana Goodman in the U.S. Alpine Championship.
After the opening run, the 18 year-old Mkaela from Vail, Colorado, led 1.22 seconds, but eventually straddled the gate in the second run. As it turned out later, after the run she caught a sort of a little weird groove and pushed on the wrong spot. After that her ski moved on the other side.
Despite such an unpleasant occasion, it seemed she was in high spirit. She said it was a great ski competition and a good end of the ski season. The student of Westminster Collage in Salt Lake City and the winner of the NorAm slalom title, Ana Goodman was the fastest in the second run. She said she tried as hard as she could to go for it, especially after the first run as she felt that was where she lost some time. This season has been pretty successful for Goodman. She won the overall NorAm slalom title, and then she resolved to go to Germany to participate in the World Cup. She said she was very excited to win the second run as she’d never won such a competition before.
Resi Stiegler of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, was second, and another Westminster student Tonje Sekse showed the third result.
Stiegler said he would have been happy to enter the top three, and didn’t think Shiffrin would make a mistake. So, it all came as a big surprise for him, he admitted. He seems to enjoy the competition as well, as he was having a great time in a good company. Stiegler hadn’t skied for a while because of the back injury, so he was happy to be back on slalom.
Katie Hartman, Colorado, had the best total time and won the combined slalom title. Lila Lapaja, Nevada, was second, and Paula Moltzan, Minnesota, showed the third combined result.
