U.S. figure skater Evan Lysacek has returned to skating in time to defend his title in the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The American tore the labrum in his left hip in a fall on a quad in training Aug. 21. He hasn’t competed since winning gold in Vancouver in 2010, sidelined last year by a torn abdominal muscle.

“Unfortunately I suffered an injury early in the season which sidelined me for a while but I’m back on the ice and happy to be back, said Lysacek.

He says he’s learned from past injuries to listen to his doctors and not risk making it worse.

“I’m taking it one day at a time and improving day by day for sure and just doing my best to obey doctors’ orders,” said Lysacek.

Lysacek was in New York Monday with his mother Tanya Lysacek to to promote a series of short films called “Raising an Olympian.”

The figure skater says he wants to come back out pride for his country and possibly tie a previous Olympian’s record.

“I know it’s an incredible record I’m trying to mimic, the one that Dick Button achieved in such an impressive manor in 1948 and 52, but I’m maybe looking forward to different things this time around.”

Lysacek needs to post a minimum technical score in an international competition within the next couple of months to be eligible for the Olympics, which start Feb. 7, 100 days from Tuesday. But he can accomplish that without his full repertoire of jumps.
